Apprentice Machinist

Belfield Home & Leisure

My role at Belfield

I joined Belfield Home & Leisure in March 2019 on an NVQ L2 apprentice programme to become a machinist and should be fully qualified in the summer of 2020 when I graduate. I applied to the course because I wanted to move into a more skilled role, and I wanted to learn.

Why I enjoy it

I am a creative person. This work appeals to me as I crochet in my spare time. I enjoy the work of making something that is part of a design process.

I am learning every day. I am surprised by how much I have enjoyed being on the course. At college I was Apprentice of the Month which came as a great surprise. I won this because   I took on extra work and gained 100% in one of my exams. I am aiming to carry on learning and progress to the NVQ L3.

My confidence has grown: Before I started here, I hadn’t been working and I was low in confidence. The people are so friendly and have made me feel very welcome, particularly my amazing mentor, Sue Kitchen.
